The Chequers

The Chequers sits in the Dorset village of Lytchett Matravers. With origins linked to the 14th century and parts of the building dating back over 300 years, it retains many of its historic features, including notably low ceilings whilst being reworked into a vibrant and welcoming space.

Overview

The Checkers was reworked to bring cohesion to a building that had evolved over time, creating a more unified and intuitive space. A series of connected areas, including a snug, bar and planted orangery, support a range of uses while feeling part of one whole.

Permaculture

The design strengthens the connection between inside and out, with planting and views grounding the space in its surroundings. Underused areas were brought into use and layered with reclaimed materials and locally sourced pieces to add depth and character.

Impact

A more cohesive and engaging pub that works more naturally for both guests and staff. Well received by the local community, it supports a broader mix of uses while retaining its place at the heart of the village.
